Careers Education at Highclare School

The aim of careers at Highclare School is to ensure that all pupils have access to accurate up-to-date careers guidance, which is presented in an impartial manner, enables a pupil to make informed choices about a broad range of career options, and allows pupils to fulfil their potential.

We aim to raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes and encourage students to consider a wide range of careers. Through careers education, information, advice and guidance pupils are encouraged to make the most of their talents and to go on to employment or further/higher education courses which suit their needs and abilities.

In particular, we intend our pupils to:

  • Develop an appreciation of their own individual interests, skills and abilities
  • Develop a broad understanding of the world of work and an ability to respond to changing opportunities
  • Develop independent research skills so that they can make good use of information and guidance
  • Develop their understanding of employability skills and how to enhance them
  • Develop the ability to review their achievements, plan future actions, make decisions, present themselves well and cope with change and transition.

What is LMI?

Labour Market Information (LMI) is information that can help to research future jobs in the local area. It tells us the types of jobs, skills and qualifications needed and average salaries. LMI gives information about the future jobs market. It tells us the job sectors and industries that are in decline, those that are currently in demand and what kind of jobs will be in demand in the future. This will help young people to identify what jobs will be in demand when they leave school, and the kind of skills they will need to have.

It is important that young people have the information they need when making decisions about their future career.
