Learning Support

Within school, on all locations, there are Learning Support Co-ordinators who provide additional support for some pupils in areas such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and those with other educational or specific needs.

This provision is made across all Key Stages, including Early Years and at Prep and Senior Levels. Learning support provision in Highclare Preparatory School is referred to as ‘Learning Success’. Referrals are usually made by class, subject or form teachers who may express a concern over a pupil. On some occasions pupils are referred by previous schools or by a parent who has a query about their individual child. End of unit tests, assessments, reading and spelling scores and practice examination papers can also be part of the framework for referrals.

The provision made for pupils who have been highlighted for support within school may be extra reading practice, handwriting tuition, spelling programmes, revision techniques, strategies for examination preparation, writing frames and coursework guidance. Some students are given a specific plan to support their personal learning. These are known as Individual Education Support Plans (Senior School) or Individual Target Plans (Prep School) which are formulated with key targets to assist the progress and development of the individual child.

Pupils are regularly monitored and their progress assessed. Parents and students are involved in this aspect of the child’s education with liaison being an integral part of the provision. On some occasions other outside agencies are included in assessments and in recommending targets.

Please contact the school if you would like to discuss provision for your child or if you require any further information regarding Learning Support at Highclare School. Policies within the policy section of the website, here entitled: Policy for Learning Support and Policy for English as an Additional Language (EAL) are relevant to this topic.

In the meantime if you have any questions about our provision then please contact admissions@highclareschool.co.uk.
