Oliver Twist – Charles Dickens

The story of the orphan Oliver, who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves, shocked readers when it was first published. Dickens’s tale of childhood innocence beset by evil depicts the dark criminal underworld of a London peopled by vivid and memorable characters — the arch-villain Fagin and menacing Bill Sikes.

Combining elements of Gothic Romance, in Oliver Twist Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society.

The Inheritance Games – Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Inheritance Games is an addictive and twisty Young Adult thriller, which readers of Karen McManus and Holly Jackson will enjoy.

Avery is going to keep her head down and work hard for a better future when she discovers she has been left an eccentric billionaire’s fortune. And no one, least of all Avery, knows why.

The mansion she must move into is filled with secrets and codes and the old man’s surviving relatives are intent on discovering why Avery got ‘their’ inheritance.

Soon she is caught in a deadly game that everyone in this strange family is playing.
