Highclare Hike, 8 May 2020

Posted: 5th May 2020

Community support is a significant part of Highclare life and as we Take Charge of our distance learning we thought the summer term 2020 charity endeavours should continue with gusto.  So, we are launching a huge whole-school challenge to raise money for two great charities while staying active, healthy and safe at home. Together we can make a difference.

The Challenge

As a school community, we will walk, run or cycle from Birmingham through Europe, checking in to some of Europe’s capital cities as they were in 1945. Our starting goal will be a total distance travelled of 1058 miles, from Birmingham to London to Paris to Brussels to Amsterdam to Berlin.

This is a hugely exciting challenge, one which will keep us active, unite us together and support others as we raise funds through sponsorship for two key charities:

  • YoungMinds, the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health.
  • SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

Timing

The event will start on Bank Holiday Friday, 8 May 2020, VE Day 2020. VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day, which took place on Tuesday, May 8 in 1945, 75 years ago.  It marked the end of World War II.  The challenge will take place over the Bank holiday weekend, miles can be logged between Friday 4th May – Sunday 6 May.

Joining In

We encourage everyone in our community to take part; pupils, family members, staff and Alumni.  Participation will take place by logging your mileage on Highclare Virtual (HV) and sponsorship via JustGiving, for those who do not have access to HV please email your mileage to reception@highclareschool.co.uk and we will log it for you!

Stay Safe and Sensible

If exercise is taking place outdoors please stick to the permitted one hour of daily exercise and practice safe social distancing.

Sponsorship

A school sponsorship page has been set up for donations on Just Giving, https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/highclare-school-ve. There is no minimum requirement to participate and every penny is appreciated.  Funds raised will be shared between Young Minds and SSAFA.

House Points

Every pupil who participates will earn points for their House.

Share your ‘Journey’

As mileage is logged on Highclare Virtual we aim to share our current ‘location’ as we travel throughout Europe. Keep up to date by following Highclare School on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Please do share with us your pictures as you take part by emailing Mrs Moore or Mrs Bennett or, when posting on social media, by adding #HighclareHike to posts.

It has never been more important to come together and show how much we care.
