In order to help all pupils to achieve ‘individual excellence’ Mathematics is taught in sets from the middle of Year 7. After the first two years each year is divided into 3 sets. The aim of the subject specialists who teach all the mathematics in the school is to help pupils to enjoy the subject and to gain confidence in their own ability at problem solving. The results of this approach are shown in our success at GCSE. Regularly over 90% of pupils have achieved a ‘C’ or above with over 80% achieving A* - B in majority of years. AS and A2 is offered in the sixth form
Aims of the English department
scienceScience at Highclare is studied in five well equipped and purpose built laboratories. The emphasis is ‘achieving individual excellence’ through varied and motivating approaches to the curriculum. Our department’s external examination results (in 2005 98% of pupils gained A* - C at GCSE) are testament to the success of this approach
General science is taught in year 7 but from year 8 upwards the pupils study separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Taught by subject specialists, through GCSE and on to Sixth form pupils are engaged with interesting, exciting and relevant practical lessons. In the Sixth form, Psychology is also an option.
