Forthcoming Activities this term at Woodfield:
HATS FOR HAITI
January 2010
During their weekly reflective Assembly at Woodfield, Year 1 & Year 2 pupils discussed the current earthquake in Haiti and the impact it was having on the children and their families. After looking at photographs of Kiki, the young survivor who was pulled from the rubble after eight days, they decided that as Woodfield is a caring school, we should extend our caring hands across the world.Consequently, it was decided to hold a fundraising event that could be enjoyed by all our children from eighteen months to 7 years.
On Friday 25th January everyone rose to the challenge! Woodfield was awash with colourful, cosy and crazy hats! Staff and parents joined with the children to raise the magnificent amount of £805! Pupils from Woodfield School Council went along to their local Oxfam Shop to deliver their cheque personally. Oxfam Headquarters in Cowley, Oxford were delighted to hear of our efforts and congratulated everyone at Woodfield.
JANUARY BRINGS THE SNOW!
The new term began on Wednesday and brought with it the snow. It was business as usual at Woodfield, however, as pupils had greatfun outdoors. Snowmen and igloos featured throughout the school grounds, with J2 even dressing theirs in suitable school uniform!

As part of their knowledge and understanding of the world activities, Reception children at Woodfield have been nurturing caterpillars in their classroom since Easter.
The children were able to observe and monitor the caterpillars’ transition as they matured, changed into chrysalises and finally emerged as “Painted Lady” butterflies. The whole process took three and a half weeks and after spending one week carefully feeding the butterflies with sugared water, flowers and fresh orange, the day finally came on Wednesday 13th May when the first butterflies were released into our Millennium Garden.
The children sang their special “Fly Butterfly Fly” song and observed as the butterflies were carefully placed on our butterfly-loving buddleia bush.
They revisited on Friday and were happy to see that they had all flown away.
Their next exciting venture will be before half term when they release their ladybirds, which were also nurtured from larvae.
We all know that we are helping to make our environment a better place!

Last week the J2 classes visited Snibston Discovery Park. It certainly brought our Science discoveries alive! We made parachutes and tested them by dropping them from the balcony. We learnt that the bigger parachutes took longer to reach the ground.
We also made our own rockets by making a cone out of paper and placing it on a bottle. When we pressed the bottle the rocket was pushed into the air!
We also had fun looking at forces in the playground at Snibston and even had our lunch on a railway carriage.
Snibston staff told us that we were one of the best behaved schools that Snibston had ever had - we were an asset to Highclare!
Well done J2!

We are delighted to be working alongside Mrs. Kent from “Urban Allotments Ltd” in producing Woodfield’s own Mini Allotment Project.
Last week Mrs. Kent came into school with her easily assembled raised beds, pots,
compost and plants, which have all been donated to Woodfield by her company
“Urban Allotments Ltd” .
Our project will be taking place in a specially prepared area near to Kindergarten.
The fence has been painted, the area checked and we’re ready to go!
Children from J1 and J2 worked with Mrs. Kent and staff on Thursday afternoon.
The “Super Salads” bed was the first to be completed.
“Herb Harvest” and “Stir Fry Selection” will be in the next wave of planting.
With a “watering” rota now in place we look forward to a bumper crop.
Watch this space………..!
