Barnaby Bear visits Winchester - Autumn 2007

Highclare St Paul's pupil, Alice, took Barnaby Bear to Winchester for a family Autumn Break.   Barnaby had an interesting and fun filled time in Winchester visiting many of the sights, he particularly enjoyed having his picture taken on numerous occasions.

Alice kept a diary of her time in Winchester and wrote a short extract for us:

We entered the Cathedral Close by going through Priors Gate. It was very pretty. There were some pretty old houses  and some were medieval.

We did a quiz as we walked round the Cathedral.   We found Jane Austin's grave. We had to look for animals in the Lady Chapel.   We found these: Bear, Bear Cub, Mouse, Squirrel, Parrot, Beaver, Rabbit, Monkey, Lion, Duck.

Barnaby will alway remember his time in Winchester and with his help and the help of her diary, Alice has been able to tell all the class about her experiences in Winchester.

A visit from the animal man - Kindergarten - j2

During our Book Week 6th -10th November we had a visit from the Animal Man which was a particular success with our children.  They observed at first-hand a Mexican King snake, a Kinkajou and a Chameleon.  The highlight of the visit was Poppy the European Eagle Owl.

Gursahib Bal J1Q wrote in his report Poppy the owl was in the Harry Potter film.  She is 7 months old. She had big orange eyes.

Nathan Lawrence J1P, wrote about the snake - The snake was called Peppi.  He had a cold flicking tongue and likes to eat mice every three weeks.

We shall certainly be inviting the Animal Man back for another visit next year.

Reception Class at Highclare St Paul's - Our First Term

We are now coming to the end of our first half term in Reception. And what a busy time we have had! All the children have settled in well, learning to be independent when leaving Mummy and Daddy in the playground and organising the things which they need for the day's work.

Our topic this term has been 'All About Me'. We have been talking about our senses, our likes and dislikes and have created pencil drawings and made jigsaws of our faces. We have also had a week looking at the story of 'Handa's Surprise', written by Eilleen Browne. During that week we have tasted some exotic fruits, found out about Africa and created clay fruit models and beautiful collage of Handa.

We have enjoyed learning all about Harvest and have celebrated this time by taking part in a Harvest Assesmbly which was all about bread. The Reception children learned and recited two poems in front of their families in the hall!   We also learned some songs to sing with the other children.

As part of our work on 'Great Artists', we have been looking at the paintings of Jackson Pollock. We got very messy and had lots of fun whilst creating these splattery pictures! We then got together and created a beautiful Autumn-inspired picture using Autumn colours and items such as leaves, conkers, twigs and acorns.

We have been out on a class trip to 'Sudbury Museum of Childhood'. We especially enjoyed the coach journey! Whilst we were there we looked at and played with lots of old toys. We also saw many famous bears in a workshop on teddy bears. This is to prepare us for our topic next half term which is 'Teddies'. We look forward to an action packed half term at the end of which will be our Christmas Production 'Whoops - A - Daisy Angel'.

Kindergarten and Transition Baking Day Monday 16th October

As a part of their preparation for our Harvest celebrations Kindergarten and Transition tasted different breads from around the world and they also made pitta breads to take home.

The children also cooked cakes and decorated them with the letter ‘C’.  This was one of the practical activities to reinforce the letter sound being taught that morning.
